A strain can only occur in muscle or tendon and it is the result of an overstretching of the muscle fibers or the tendon fibers. If it makes it easier to understand think of a strain as a tear in the muscle or tendon, because that is what it is. Now strains are categorized by there severity and there are 3 different levels or grades that are used.
Grade 1 Strain:
- Only Mild strain
- Only slight overstretching in the muscle or tendon
- No loss of strength or movement
- No tearing or the muscle or tendon
Grade 2 Strain:
- Moderate strain
- overstretching has resulted in partial tearing or the muscle or tendon
- Loss of some strength
Grade 3 Strain:
- Severe Strain
- complete rupture of the muscle or tendon
- normally requires surgical repair
- severe or complete loss of strength and movement
