Ankle Exostosis Definition:
an ankle exostosis is also refered to as a ankle bone spur or calcium deposit on the ankle. Basically ankle exostosis is a build up of bone on the side of the ankle.
Ankle Exostosis Parts involved:
- Talus
- Tibia
- Fibula
- Soft tissues surrounding the bone spur such as blood vessels, nerve, and muscle
Ankle Exostosis Signs & Symptoms:
- possible loss of movement of the ankle
- occasionally visible deformity can be visible if the bony spur is large enough
- minor pain during movement of the ankle, sometimes no pain at all
- possibly swelling after excessive movement of the ankle if the bone spur is rubbing against soft tissues
Ankle Exostosis Risk Factors:
- Previous ankle injuries
- deficiency of vitamins and minerals caused by poor nutrition
- sports that require lots of sprinting or jumping
Ankle Exostosis Prevention:
- Warm up properly before any physical activity
- Make sure muscles of lower leg are properly conditioned and strong
- seek professional treatment if you injure your ankle to ensure it heals right to avoid developing ankle exostosis in the future
